Meet Our Team | Jamie Rojas, IT Infrastructure Manager
Jamie started his passion for technology at a young age when he spent his spare time helping family and friends with their computer problems, even getting paid for it. Not surprisingly Jamie ended up studying IT at university where he landed his first official IT job working on the support desk. Jamie then moved on to IBM, Assetinsure and Excite IT before joining the team at Berkley Insurance Company.
Technology plays a big role in any business today and our IT team is no different, supporting the entire Berkley APAC business. The IT team is made up of 11 people, divided into various teams designed to best support the needs of the business. This support can include anything technology-related including computers and phones our team uses to servers and core applications required for the business operations.
Jamie says the team is collaborative “where everyone is encouraged to take responsibility and propose ideas and solutions to problems we are faced with. In pre-COVID days, we would bounce ideas around our office, now we have regular meetings on MS Teams and WebEx.”
Right now Jamie and the team is focused on refreshing the infrastructure “which will see us update and replace our data centre and remote office hardware to ensure we are keeping everything up to date, supported and maintained.” They are also heavily involved in many projects to improve operational processes for the business and clients such as the BIA online portal, in-house data warehouse and IT security initiatives. In the long term, Jamie is focused on “encouraging my team members to continue to learn, to train in developing technologies and to advance in their careers helping the business stay innovative and successful.”
The IT team has not been impacted by COVID-19 due to their disaster recovery planning they were able to continue supporting the business with little to no interruption to daily operations. Although the team has been working remotely since March 2020 they have continued their innovative approach to collaboration by introducing new tools and services that encourage frequent communication. Jamie’s top software of choice right now is Microsoft Teams “Working remotely it has become an essential tool to keep in touch with my team, my manager, and other employees within the W. R. Berkley Corporation both locally and across the globe, whilst giving us additional features for document sharing and collaboration.”
Jamie is excited about what the future holds in the technological landscape saying “Over the last decade, Hyper-Convergence has redefined how technology solutions are built by moving away from specific function-built hardware to a software-defined model where this functionality runs as a program in a virtualised environment. We have adopted this approach in our first infrastructure refresh in 2015. This technology facilitates faster adoption of change and much more capability to collaborate across multiple environments across internal network and internet cloud services, a prime example being Teams, Office 365 and our new automated quote and bind system.”
The future of IT will still have many challenges for Jamie and the team to tackle with the rising threat of Information Security and Cyber Security “As these threats become more frequent and advanced in their nature, the systems and steps required to best mitigate these come at a cost both financially and complexity. However, the cost to a business or company that does get breached can be far more devastating.”
Jamie and the team are currently looking for two IT enthusiasts to join the team. For more information about our careers click here.
