Getting to know your local underwriter is what sets us apart. The broker underwriter relationship is really important to us and we love sharing who we are so you can get to know our team. Today we sat down with Jess from our Brisbane team who joined us last year. We could not be happier to have such an experienced and personable underwriter joining the team!

Tell us a bit about being an Underwriter?

No two businesses are the same so each day is different and interesting.

As an underwriter, we need to understand our insureds business, their industry, qualifications and risk management. We need to review the information provided and be able to assess the risk by asking the right questions or finding a solution to provide the cover the client requires. 

How do you like your coffee?

Oat latte in the morning… probably two.

What is your biggest achievement to date – personal or professional?

I think life is a series of achievements and we are always learning and growing.

What does a typical day look like for you and what are you currently working on?

As I am new to BIA I am still learning the systems and acquainting myself with the team, our products and guidelines.

Currently, I am working on understanding the policies I will be looking after and starting to quote renewals and new business opportunities.

What are three words to describe Berkley Insurance Australia?

Knowledgeable, efficient, innovative

What is something people in insurance have to deal with that you want to fix?

The perception that we are all salespeople working in call centres and if the “computer says no” we can’t add any more value.

There are a lot of careers and great opportunities in this industry that people outside of it are completely unaware exist.

What do you like most about working with brokers?

Being able to have a discussion with a broker who has a full understanding of their client’s business so we can work together to find the best solution for their client.

When was the last time you laughed so hard you cried?

Often. Probably when listening to one of my favourite podcasts.

What podcasts or books are listening/reading right now?

Currently listening to the Toni and Ryan podcast and The It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia podcast.

What is your guilty pleasure?

Anything sweet!
