Confessions of an Underwriter: Jane Makin
It’s been said time and time again: no two days are the same. And nowhere does this ring truer than in the enigmatic world of underwriting. As a relatively new addition to the Berkley Liability team, Jane Makin is immersed in the thrill of constant learning. Each incoming submission is a fresh opportunity to grow, a tantalising thread leading to an ever-expanding tapestry of knowledge.
The Necessities: Coffee and Chaos
Jane relishes her morning jolt of caffeine, a strong latte meticulously brewed with a generous splash of love. There’s nothing quite like that comforting embrace of warmth as she boards the 7.30 train, balancing the chaos of school drop-offs and day care duties with the calm anticipation of a busy day at the office.
The Highlight Reel: Proudest Moments
There are many achievements that make her proud, both professionally and personally. But the journey of bringing two beautiful children into this world stands out as the crowning achievement in Janes life.
Work, Work, Work: Juggling Acts and June Renewals
Once in the office, Jane’s day whirls by in an outbreak of tasks. Amid the hectic hustle and bustle of renewals (June is, after all, a particularly vibrant month in the underwriting calendar), Jane finds herself continuously learning and evolving with Jane stating “there’s no such thing as a typical day at Berkley Insurance Australia. Our ethos could be summed up in three words: welcoming, inclusive, award-winning. It’s a culture that encourages exploration and nurtures potential.”
People First: Broker Bonds
There’s a lot to love about working with brokers, but the rich diversity of personalities I encounter on a daily basis remains a favourite. For Jane, engaging with clients forms a dynamic partnership, a unique opportunity to understand and serve their specific needs, “I truly believe there is nothing more rewarding than that.”
The Lighter Side: Laughs and Literature
We all need a good laugh, don’t we? If you don’t find Jane sorting through submissions she is on the couch enjoying a Netflix mockumentary, Cunk on Earth saying “If you’ve seen it, you know exactly why it had me in stitches”.
On her library list Jane enjoys the thrilling exploration of crime fiction and outback noir. Authors like Michael Robotham, Jane Harper, and Chris Hammer.
Guilty Pleasures: The Sweeter Side
And let’s be honest, who doesn’t have a guilty pleasure? Jane’s just happens to be gummi bears and garlic bread. Because let’s face it, we all need that bit of sugary sweetness (and a dash of garlicky goodness) in our lives, don’t we?
