Meet the Team: Sydney Edition

We’ve introduced you to our Brisbane crew – now it’s time to head south and meet the Sydney office. They’re a talented bunch who bring expertise, energy, and plenty of personality to the table. From underwriting challenges to weekend adventures, here’s a closer look at the people behind the policies.

Tony Wheatley – Chief Executive Officer

Tony Wheatley has over 35 years’ experience in underwriting, claims, reinsurance and portfolio management. His expertise lies largely in the PI, D&O and medical malpractice classes having worked his way through various underwriting positions before moving into management roles.

Joining Berkley Insurance Australia in July of 2012, his background includes a broad expertise in managing insurance companies, managing general agents and insurance and reinsurance portfolios.

Trevor Williamson – State Manager NSW/ACT

Trevor has 25 years’ experience across claims and underwriting, specialising in Public and Products Liability. He leads the NSW and ACT open market team with a steady hand and global perspective. Outside of work, Trevor’s all about family, travel through South East Asia, and keeping active with cycling, running, football, and golf.

Ben Holl – Assistant Underwriter

Ben made the leap from Business Support Officer to Assistant Underwriter in just a year, showing real drive and adaptability. He’s eager to learn the ins and outs of underwriting and brings plenty of enthusiasm to the team. Away from the desk, Ben’s all about sports and social catch-ups with friends, bringing the same energy and team spirit to everything he does.

Matt Armstrong – Financial Lines Underwriter

With 10 years in insurance, Matt’s journey from broking to underwriting has given him a broad perspective and a special focus on financial lines. He’s curious by nature and works closely with intermediaries to find the right solutions. Away from the office, Matt’s all about low-and-slow BBQs, a wide mix of sports, and time with his kids.

Reece Jones – Liability Underwriter

Reece may be new to the industry, but he’s already making his mark with a strong focus on underwriting and building lasting relationships. His drive and curiosity set him apart, and he’s committed to delivering great service. Away from work, Reece channels his competitive streak into CrossFit, taking on competitions that fuel the same discipline and resilience he brings to the office.

Kelly McGinnis – Assistant Underwriter

Kelly joined Berkley Insurance Australia in 2024 and brings international experience across the Australian and U.S. markets. Specialising in Financial Lines, she’s known for her attention to detail and seamless service to brokers. Outside the office, Kelly enjoys going for coastal and bush walks, reading, swimming at and exploring the Australian beaches, running, and travelling.

Chloe Strawn-Austin – State Business Support Officer

Chloe has spent six years at Berkley Insurance Australia supporting the NSW team and keeping operations running smoothly. Her role focuses on organisation and ensuring the team has what they need to succeed. When she’s not at work, Chloe’s passion for travel takes centre stage. She loves exploring new destinations, immersing herself in different cultures, and finding inspiration in the places she visits.

Chris Milton – Senior Underwriter Financial Lines

With over 20 years of experience in financial lines underwriting, Chris Milton is a Senior Underwriter who specialises across a broad spectrum of financial lines products. He brings extensive market knowledge and disciplined risk assessment to SME, mid-market, and corporate portfolios, coupled with a strong commitment to customer service. Outside of work, Chris is a dedicated family man, an avid basketball player, and a golf enthusiast.

Issey Blades – Business Support Officer

Issey joined Berkley Insurance Australia in October 2024 after completing her studies in the United Kingdom and relocating to Sydney. She is passionate about building her career in the insurance industry and is eager to gain hands‑on experience while contributing fresh ideas and enthusiasm to the team. Outside of work, Issey enjoys exploring Sydney’s vibrant lifestyle, spending time with friends, and making the most of the city’s sunshine.

Melissa Lacy – Underwriter

Melissa Lacy is an experienced Underwriter with over 20 years in the insurance industry. Her career began when she was an expat in Edinburgh, where she first entered the world of insurance. After returning to Melbourne, Melissa worked as an Insurance Broker for around six years, building her expertise in client relations and risk solutions. She later relocated to Sydney, where she transitioned into Underwriting, focusing on the Professional Indemnity segment. A Melbourne native, Melissa is a passionate AFL follower and remains dedicated to her personal fitness, whether through playing sports or engaging in regular exercise.

Mathew Konopka – Senior Underwriter General Liability

Mathew Konopka is a Senior Underwriter, General Liability at Berkley Insurance Australia, based in Sydney. With over 15 years of experience in the insurance industry, he began his career in the SME space and progressed through multi-line and corporate roles before joining the team in 2018. Mathew is known for his collaborative spirit, strong problem-solving skills, and commitment to delivering reliable insurance solutions. Outside of work, he enjoys a good pun and a strong cup of coffee.

Paul Marques – Senior Underwriter Financial Lines

Paul has been in the insurance industry for just about 20 years covering most facets of financial lines products including professional indemnity, directors & officers, medical malpractice and Information technology.

Paul has also enjoyed the opportunity to work in two different states with very different market conditions. Paul is an approachable underwriter who appreciates all opportunities provided by his intermediaries and genuinely wants to find a solution their insurance needs.

Damien Stephen – National Head of IT Liability

Damien has been specialising in IT Liability underwriting for over 12 years. His expertise has been demonstrated through recent policy improvements that have made BIA a significant player in the Australian IT Liability landscape.
