Meet the Team: Brisbane Edition

We’ve introduced you to our bindIT team – now it’s time to head north and meet the crew in our Brisbane office. They’re a talented bunch who know their stuff when it comes to underwriting and broker relationships, but there’s a lot more to them than what’s on their business cards. From backyard BBQs to true crime podcasts, here’s a closer look at the people behind the policies.

Matthew McPhee – National Underwriting Manager

Matt’s been in the game for over 30 years, with experience across PI, ML, D&O, and GL. He’s all about giving brokers top-notch service and advice, backed by a Commerce degree and Fellowship with ANZIIF. But don’t let the experience fool you – Matt’s also the guy who was up at 4am this morning training for his next bike race. He brings energy, expertise, and just the right amount of pedal power to the team.

Paul Kelly – State Manager QLD/NT

Paul’s almost 40 year career in financial services began in the stock market before he found his way to insurance where he has worked as a broker and an underwriter.

Today, he’s the go-to for all things liability in Queensland and the Northern Territory.

Paul is happy to share his knowledge and welcomes a phone call to discuss that challenging risk even at 4 O’clock on a Friday afternoon.

Nicole Carey – National Head of New Products

Nicole’s background is a mix of science, law, and broking, which makes her perfect for developing new products. She’s curious, creative, and always thinking ahead. Outside of work, she’s happiest hanging out with her boys, watching a good crime / mystery show or curled up with a good book. If you’re ever stuck on a trivia question, Nicole probably knows the answer and the backstory.

Emily Meddings – Underwriter

Emily’s journey into insurance started in medical indemnity, but her background in criminology gives her a unique edge. She’s thoughtful, analytical, and is always up for a chat. Outside of work, you can find her on the footy field or the sidelines either playing or coaching AFL. She’s been involved with several community clubs over the last decade and is still trying to take a specky.

Alison Campbell – Underwriter

Alison is one of those people who brings a sense of calm to the room. She’s detail-oriented, collaborative, and always ready to help. When she’s not working, she’s probably reading, spending time with her family, or checking out a local art exhibit. She’s got a quiet love for live music and a great eye for Brisbane’s hidden gems.

Sue Pereira – Underwriter

Sue Pereira brings over 15 years of experience in the insurance industry, having built a diverse career spanning broking, underwriting, and product development. Her journey began in domestic insurance and evolved through cyber underwriting to her current focus on financial lines. Known for her commitment to continuous learning, Sue is a breadth of knowledge and a trusted resource for colleagues and brokers alike. She’s passionate about delivering exceptional customer service and is recognized for her warm, approachable style that instantly puts people at ease. Outside of work, Sue treasures weekends spent with her family, making the most of quality time and connection.

Daniel Smith – Senior Underwriter

With 26 years in the insurance industry, Daniel has built a career spanning both broking and underwriting, working with risks ranging from small retail businesses to multinational corporations across the globe. These diverse experiences have sharpened his perspective and fueled a creative approach to risk. He remains energised by the challenges the industry presents and continues to find inspiration in solving complex problems.

Nerida Kearney – Business Support Officer

Nerida has been with Berkley for seven years and thrives on the variety of challenges each day brings. When she’s not at work, she’s likely spending time with her five grandchildren, tending to her garden, or lighting up the dance floor. Her energy and enthusiasm are just as strong outside the office as they are in it.

Sandra Brown – Business Support Officer

Sandra has been in insurance for about 10 years, and came from a very different background, that of import shipping. In her spare time, she enjoys a nice long walk with family, a night at the theatre, whether it is drama, ballet or opera. Other than that, she has a love of reading and is a big fan of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series.

Reet Mann – Business Support Officer

Reet had a varied background in banking and commercial real estate before joining our team in Brisbane. Outside the office, Reet finds rhythm in life – literally – by playing djembe (drums) with friends, blending creativity and connection and is a passionate home stylist for real estate firms

Whether they’re solving complex underwriting challenges or swapping book recommendations over coffee, the Brisbane team is full of personality, passion, and heart. They’re the kind of people who make work feel a little less like work – and a lot more like a team.
